Produced between 1972 and 1989, the SD40-2 was the most successful of EMD’s “Dash 2” series of road switchers. More than 4000 of this 6-axle model were produced, mostly for operators within North America, although a number of examples made it as far as Australia, South America, and elsewhere internationally. Their ability to ably handle road freight and switching operations made them a fast favorite among early operating crews and ensures that the type remains an essential component to the roster of most major freight railroads today. The Bachmann SD40-2 makes its first appearance in our N scale line in almost two decades with completely new tooling, DCC Econami™ Sound Value On Board®, era-specific front-end configurations, and a range of authentic paint schemes.
